SURLY Sunset Bar and CRUST Wombat

Surly has just dropped a new handlebar.

 

Actually, we’ve already started to sell them a lot both of in-store and online store.

As this is the first time, I’ gonna introduce it before it’s gone.

*SURLY* sunset bar (black)

There is a handlebar called “Sunrise Bar”, but this is something like a spin-off.

It was the end of 2017 when a Sunrise bar is just launched.

Over 800mm long and 22.2mm handlebar clamp.

I think there are some handlebar with similar specs right now, but I guess this was really advanced at the time of release.

It’s more like a handlebar mixed up cruiser bar and trail bar and BMX bar and it’s understandable that it’s used on Surly Lowside complete bikes.

Sunset Bar is the handlebar which remains all of those 3 elements and add a bit of relaxed taste.

I believe this is really cool. It’s super useful and actually I feel pretty good to ride.

 

 

The difference is quite obvious from the figures.

Sunset Bar has…

higher rise (grip comes higher position)

more back-sweep (grip comes closer to you)

higher up-sweep (grip comes much higher)

than Sunrise Bar.

 

The word “rise” make you confused, but Sunset Bar has higher rise!

 

As it’s a bit difficult to see how they’re different, I tried to visualize.

Daichi (Left) holds “Sunrise Bar” and I (Right) hold “Sunset Bar”.

It’s higher and the angle of grip is slightly upwards. (And I was smiling a lot.)

The grip comes closer to me.

Does it make any sense? Is it only me who think it’s kinda easy to understand?

By the way, both are 820mm wide and 22.2mm clamp diameter (including a shim for 31.8mm clamp)

I’d like to put it on everyday bikes, commuters, OLD MTBs and of course gravel bikes and MTBs!

I think everyone can enjoy it since it can be cut as you like.

 

It’s great for the restorations and bike you haven’t ridden for long time.

Or it’s also perfect when you’ve cut steerer column too much, but you wanna revive it as a cruiser.

 

I have great expectations that it’ll be very popular with Sunrise Bar.

 

Then, it comes to the Wombat which appeared in the beginning.

We had it as a complete bike before, but I’ve built it again when Sunset Bar arrives.

Sunset Bar fits amazingly well on this bike.

It may be natural since Wombat is something mixed MTB and BMX.

You can have fun city ride, but it can be used for an aggressive riding when the field changes.

Velocity Cliffhanger, the best combination with Wombat has great durability and American tastes.

Panaracer Fire PRO is definite all-rounder tire and doesn’t get flat so easy.

I put Surly chainring on XMC crank.

Gear ratio is 36/16=2.25

I think that a bit light ratio makes this bike more fun.

Pedal is Crust special ordered MKS Sylvan Gordito.

I chose reliable parts, but still saving the cost.

 

How’s it?

Single speed has an unique fun due to its simple structure and Wombat is the one makes it east to feel it.

You can ride it as it is or add some customs to it.
