Yet, a single speed bike is one of the most popular kinds of bikes. I built a couple of single speed bikes recently. Let’s take a look!

Surly Steamroller is the bestsellers in our shop. Many of our staff ride this as a commuter.

The Velo Orange caliper brakes are super stiff, probably the stiffest long reach brakes ever made. This looks very cool and last longer than other brakes.

The Philwood headset, the Nitto stem and spacers are all made by chromoly steel. Especially chromoly stem is responsive and offers good flex while maintaining its form. It is great for a commuter ride.

The Nitto 65 seat post is stiff and beautiful.

The pedals are MKS Rambda. The legit pedals have spike pins that provide holding of your shoe. There is no problem with winter boots.

The most unique thing of Steamroller as a single speed bike is a wide tire clearance. The room for tires is up to 700c x 38mm. I think 32c would be the best for an urban commuter in Tokyo and Panaracer Gravel King is amazing tire.

Single speed bikes are widely prized for their simplicity in design and low cost. You can get a lighter bike with better components. There are fewer parts on the bicycle that require maintenance, making this type of cycle useful for city commuting in all weather. If you want to get your first bike, the single speed would be the best choice. Like simple is the best.
