Outside Supply, my favorite bike shop in Costa Mesa California, ran by the Koide-san, who also runs The Inconvenience Store.

Max a.k.a. dirttoads (to your left) is the mechanic of Outside Supply. Tom your right is Cameron, who rides a T.I.E! Probably the very fist T.I.E that was shipped internationally.

Some of you may have seen his signature handlebar, Toad Bar.
The Toad Bar is an excellent bar for dirt fixed gear bike riding that Max is currently into. He rips on a bike.

The dude that is absolutely ripping is Grant Nobel-san, a surfboard shaper.

I laughed at these comments between the two on the post.

This blog is about the handlebar that Grant has on his Midnight Special. I’m really happy to finally release these.

*Outside Supply* therapy bar

I’m stoked to introduce the “Therapy Bar”, my signature handlebar from Outside Supply. The Therapy Bar lays somewhere in between of a cruiser bar and a riser bar.

I’d like to thank Yuta-san for offering me this opportunity. I’m so thrilled that I got to design my own handlebar that I wanted, with my favorite shop in Cali.

It all started with the idea of finding the perfect handlebars for my Evasion Trail 140. Possibly, my favorite bike. It was super fun to think about the shapes and bends of the bars and to see them come to life.

Like any other bike products, we made a lot of samples for these and had changed as we went on. It’s really hard to deign a Handlebar. The samples were not clear coated so it rusted pretty easy. Don’t worry, the production model won’t have that issue.

I think the bars have the perfect angle for cruising and ride a long distance. Nagaoka-san from Hub got one for his bike and said that they’re super good to do bunnyhops, which made me happy.

Here are the specs.

—————————————-

Width: 790mm
Grip Area : 220mm
Backsweep : 24°
Rise : 45mm
Rise (to the bar end) : 62mm
Rise Angle : 5°

Available in black and raw.

790mm is a perfect width for me. I also liked how 790mm looked, instead of 800 or 780. I extended the grip area to 220mm on the production models, so you’ll be able to trim them down a lot. This is because I wanted the bar to fit various types of bikes and to make it easier for Japanese riders, who are smaller in general. If I were to put this on a single speed bike, I’d cut them down to 700mm.

The flat section and the small rise is where I did a lot of the adjustments. I wanted the bar to be able to fit big handlebar bags nicely and I just like the look of riser bars that have wide flat section.

I made the rise angle smaller, so you could use the bars as a cruiser bars when mounting them in the expected angle. You could tilt the bars forward and lessen the backsweep, making it feel better for aggressive riding.

The bars also feature engravings that says “Made by S&M”, which weren’t on the Toad Bars.

Lastly, I’d like to go back to when I visited Cali.

When I stopped by Outside Supply, Jason Ball of S&M BIKES happened to be there. He’s the man in the photo.

Since its founding in 1987, S&M Bikes has remained a truly legendary BMX manufacturer in Santa Ana, steadfastly upholding its “Made in USA” commitment. I see it as a brand that embodies a spirit of craftsmanship, producing rugged, rider-focused products and handling everything from welding to painting in-house.

Some of you may also know that they manufacture some of Wilde’s handlebars.

Jason is someone who had been working for the brand for a long time. He is also a legendary rider and has his own signature model frame.

He’s insanely good!

“Sheep Hills,” a BMX dirt trail in Costa Mesa. It’s a trail with a long history, believe it or not, it’s been around since the 1980s.

I’d been wanting to visit ever since seeing it in a ton of ride vids, and now that I’ve actually been there, it’s become a truly memorable place for me.

The photo above was apparently taken on the spot after Yuta happened to run into him and asked for a quick shot. Jason apparently has been riding this trail almost every day, for about 40 years! He’s such a legend.

I wanted to mention this so you’d know that this handlebar was actually designed by him.

With all that said, I’m really sorry, but these bars will be available in stores only, due to small stocks. (Outside Supply has some up on their website though)

And here are some bikes with the bars that were built at Outside Supply.

Gio’s Wombat and Yuta’s brown vintage Miyata, I think.

I’d love to see everybody’s builds if you ever get one, so send all the pics to me!

It all started with Jason and Yuta meeting, and when Yuta said, “I’ll make one with Max first, but you’re up next” which is how these bars came to be. Thank you so much Yuta-san!

Last but not least, thanks to Sean for creating the 3D data and Casey for the logo design.
