Santa here!

I recently got an MTB. Now I can join in the Blue Lug Mountain Bike Club!

I’m almost done with the build. Hope I can show it soon.

Today, I’m writing about the Surly Midnight Special.

Surly describes the bike as “Road Plus Bike That Tackles Pavement & Gravel”

That’s right. A road plus that can take 650 x 47B tires.

The outer diameter of 700 x 28C and 650 x 47B tires are actually almost the same.

Of course, the 700c tires are more light weight compared to 650b tires, and makes less contact with the ground, so 700c tires roll well. However, the Midnight Special can fit tires that are about the same diameter of a 700c tire that are about 60mm wide. You can ride clean or shitty pavement, gravel, and more different terrain. It’s literally an all-road bike.

I have two Midnight Special builds I want to talk about.

A flat bar build Midnight Special.

This was a build for a customer. They brought in a handlebar that they used for a different bike.

They could have chosen a frame that was one size larger, but they also wanted to convert the bike into a drop bar build, so they went with size 56.

Ultradynamico tires of course. They are light weight and most importantly, beautiful.

Front rose, rear Cava combo.

Velocity Blunt SS Rims to get the full road plus experience.

Shimano GRX Limited. components.

They match the metalic grey custom paint very well.*SURLY* midnight special (56)

The owner had already gone on a ferry trip to Izu Oshima with this bike. Glad they’re enjoying the life with bicycles!

Same frame size, same frame, different bike.

At first, the owner was planning on a drop bar build, but he decided to go with the sweep bar set up, since he was going to ride the bike everyday.

The handlebar he chose was Ronnie’s Ortho Bars.

690mm in width with plenty of space place to grab, giving the riders multiple riding positions.

No more back pains!

It is a chill handlebar, but can also be great for dirt touring.

Ultraromance himself would go off-roading with the Ortho bars.

My gosh, he looks so good on a bike.

Love how the owner put in some colors for the build too.

Same as the last bike, Rose with Blunt SS rims, but this one is tubeless.

GRX limited again.

This build was mainly for commuting, but just in case he wants to shred gravel,

I really like how both build turned out!

Surly bikes are so fun to build and ride. I know we’ve said it like a million times, but it’s true!

The new color of the Midnight Special, “fools gold” is now available!
