SWIFT CAMPOUT 2020

毎年日照時間が長い夏至の日に、世界中の自転車乗りが世界同時多発で同じ日にバイクキャンプをやっちゃおうというイベント SWIFT CAMPOUT 。
このご時世もあって9/26-27（土-日）に延期されてたわけですが、楽しい時間はあっという間でした。

僕は”自転車”は、日常の中で当たり前のように便利だから好きだし、あまり非日常や何かに特化しすぎたバイク至上主義というわけではないのですが、今回のCAMPOUTを経て、素直な気持ち「ぶっちゃけまた行きたい」。

メンバーは僕、ダンカン、ウエンツ、一周の上馬スタッフに加え幡ヶ谷からティモ君、ジャグ兄の6人。行き先は山梨県の本栖湖。ハイエースに6人+6台を詰め込んで約２時間。

僕と同じくなバイクキャンプビギナーさんが「ちょっと似たようなことやってみたいかも」と好奇心をモッコリさせてしまうこと。未来初体験をたくさん発生させれたら嬉しい。

"Swift Campout" is a global call to go bike-camping. Usually, the event is held in mid June, when the daylight hours are the longest in the year. Due to the current circumstances, the event was postponed to September 26th and 27th.
We took part in this amazing event, and I gotta tell you. It was a blast and time went by so fast.

I love "bikes" for how convenient they are in our daily lives. And I'm not the type of guy to like a bike that is specialized in something. But my honest opinion after this event is, "I wanna do it again".
These are the six members who participated.Me, dankan, Wentz, Isshu from Blue Lug Kamiuma, and also Timo, and Jugg from Blue Lug Hatagaya joined in.

I'm hoping that bike-camp beginners like me, would see this and think "I wanna do something like that" or have some kind of curiosity and let your imagination fly.

パニアにはライド時に必要のないものを。ZEITGEISTは常につけっぱなしなのでライド中に必要な雨具や体温調節系、すぐに出し入れしたいものを中心にパッキングしました。In the pannier bag, I put the stuff I wasn't gonna use during the ride in the pannier bag. Meanwhile I put stuff that I would frequently use during ride in my Zeitgeist since it was on my bike the whole time, rain wear, jackets and other stuff to keep me warm.

■気付いたこと■Things I have noticed

バンダナは汗拭き、手拭い、日除け、小物をまとめたり、ブレーキレバーを縛って駐輪時のサイドブレーキにしたりと大活躍。Having a bandana was a game changer. I used them to wipe sweat, used it as a towel, sunshade, to tie up small belongings, and to tie brake levers when I parked my bike.
*FAIRWEATHER* dry sackは中身が濡れないので着替、下着、汚れ物用に3枚準備しました。Since the *FAIRWEATHER* dry sack has a great water repellent material, I brought 3 of them to put in my undies, change of clothes, and for putting dirty clothes.

大きなバイクバッグがない場合、バスケットに*FAIRWEATHER* packable sacocheに入れた荷物をX-strapで固定するのが調子良し。
嵩張るものは容量あって走行の邪魔になりにくいサドルバッグに。走行中にアクセスしやすいフレームバッグには、使用頻度少ないものは下に、頻繁に取り出ものを上の方に入れていました。 If you don't have big bike bags I suggest you to put your stuff in the *FAIRWEATHER* packable sacoche and put the bag in your basket and strap it up with the X-Strap.
Putting bulkier stuff in the frame bag helps a lot when riding. I put stuff that I need quick access on the upper part of the bag and shoved everything else in the bottom part of the bag.

スリーピングマットはバッグのフラップに挟み込むと邪魔になりにくいです。
しっかり容量があるバッグは使わなかったので荷物をバランスよく振り分けて積むスタイルでしたが、重さが分散し、走りが軽快でした。Putting sleeping mats between the bag flap was a great idea. I wasn't getting bothered at all during ride.
Since I didn't bring a huge bag, I needed to split my stuff into a few bags. But that turned out to balance out the weight and it was really easy to ride.

フロントラックにパニアとバスケットをつけて、荷物は全部フロントに集合させました。薪が重かったのがありますが、もう少し前後で荷物は分けたほうが調子いいですね。I equipped panniers and a basket on the front rack, and put all my stuff on the front. I'm sure that the firewood was the thing causing me trouble to ride, but I should have packed some stuff in the back as well to gain more balance.

■気付いたこと■Things I have noticed

VOILE STRAPSは本当に何でも使えるので最低2本は持っておくといいと思います。
「あーずるいなぁ」と思ったのが折りたたみ椅子。背もたれ付きの椅子を持ってきてる人は楽そうで羨ましかったので次のキャンプまでに絶対買います。One thing that I think is a must to bring are VOILE Straps. At least two of them. They're VERY handy.
One thing that I felt jealous about is camping chairs with a back rest. I'm definitely gonna buy one before my next campout.

テントではなくハンモックでの宿泊にすることで、容量を節約。パニアには衣類や寝袋等の軽いけど体積の大きいものを収納してハンドルがとられ辛いようにしました。
体に近いところには重いものを。遠いところには軽いものを。Bringing a hammock instead of a tent will help save up space for your bags dramatically. Also putting stuff like your clothes and sleeping bags, things that is bulky but light in your pannier bag helps your steering. Putting heavier stuff in the bag near you and light stuff in the bag far from you is the key.

SINEWAVEのダイナモライトをダイナモハブではなくモバイルバッテリーで光らせていました。意外と電力消費しないしこういう使い方も全然アリだなと実感。
グロウラーにはビールを早朝にキンキンの状態で注いで、夜まで林道走り回っても炭酸抜けず驚き。保冷はまぁまぁ。ペダル漕いでも腿は当たらず。
ダウンチューブ下につけてたサイクルボトルは、フロントタイヤの土やら草やらの跳ね上げがモロに引っ被ってしまい失敗。NALGEN等の蓋がボトルから離れるタイプにした方が良さそうです。I was using the Sinewave dynamo light without the dynamo hub. Instead I used it with mobile batteries. I realized that they don't eat up your batteries one bit. It was definitely a great idea.
I poured two liters of ice cold beer in the Growler first thing in the morning before departure, and didn't loose the fizz until the night, even though I was riding through the bumpy trail. It was mind blowing, but couldn't keep the beer cold that much. My thighs didn't hit the bottle when pedaling.
The cycling bottle under the downtube was a failure. All the mud, and gunk went directly to the part where I put my mouth. I would recommend a type of bottle where the lid comes off of the bottle itself.

パッキングはおおまかに「泊まる系」「調理器具系」をパニアバッグに、「バッテリー、工具系」などの必要なときにすぐに取り出したいものはサドルバッグとパニアのアウトポケットにまとめました。
寝袋やマットなどマストで必要なものは軽くてコンパクトなものを選んだ方が、食事やコーヒーセットみたいなプラスアルファの楽しみを充実させられます。
ラックの天板は買い出しした食材や脱いだジャケットなんかを載せるエクストラスペースのつもりで。パニアに入らなかったテントのポールもここに留めました。I packed all the sleeping gear and cooking gear in my pannier bag, and things I want quick access like batteries and tools in the pocket of the pannier bags and saddle bag.
Choosing small and compact essentials like, sleeping bags and mats will give you more space to bring other fun stuff such as coffee kits and such.
On top of the rack, I put food, my jacket, and the poles for my tent which I couldn't fit in the pannier bag. I had the rack as an extra space.

レンタルした登山用の定番テントが良かったので、一式買い揃える前にまずはレンタルで感じをつかむってのも大アリだと思いました。I rented a rental tent for mountain climbing and it was great, so before buying all the camping gear, it might be a good idea to rent some stuff at first and see what it's like.

フロントラックに直接バッグを載せてVOILE STRAPSで固定するスタイル。
意外と積載量のあるファビオにほぼ全てのモノを詰めて行ったのですが、高い位置に「重さ」があるので安定感に欠ける所はあったけど、やっぱり頼りになるバッグでした。I put my bag directly on to the front rack and tied it up with the VOILE straps.
Packing everything in Fabio's Chest was a questionable decision since all the weight was on the front. But the bag was still amazingly useful.

■気付いたこと■Things I have noticed

ヘッドライトとコーヒーセットは持って行ってよかった。
今回は６人でキャンプに行って４人が豆持参、各自コーヒーミルも持っているという（笑）みんなでゴリゴリとコーヒー豆を引いている姿が微笑ましかったです。Bringing a headlamp and a coffee kit was a bright idea.
Six out of four members brought out their own coffee beans and everyone had their own grinder. The moment where everybody was grinding beans was pretty funny.

DEPARTURE
AM 5:005:00 a.m.

今回は、キャンプ場までの「輪行＋自走」ではなくパプア級輸送艦「ハイエース」を駆使。

キャンプ場が予約制ではなく先着場所取りなので、まずはチェックイン。

BASE CAMP設置後にライドというプラン。

We decided to take a ride on our huge company car, Toyota HiAce to the camp site.

We couldn't reserve a spot so we had to check in before anything else.

After setting our base camp, the fun begins.

ARRIVAL
AM 9:009:00 a.m.

今まで興味のなかったキャンプギアがどれもすごく格好良く見える。。機能と重量とルックスと・・軽量、剛性、カラーアルマイト・・自転車好きなら刺さる要素てんこ盛り。

テントを楽しそうに解説するジャグ兄を見て、バッグとテントってもしかしたら似てるんだろうか？と思った。空間を生地で仕切っていくような・・わかんないけど。

日本一周中何度もキャンプしてた一周と、登山大好きウエンツの野生児コンビも手際が良い。自転車屋のピットでは見れないメンバーの長所。

I never thought I would be so fascinated by camping gear. Now everything looks badass... The functionality, the weight, the looks. Light weight, rigidness, colored alloy all the elements that would excite a bike lover was in the camping gear.

Jugg, who is one of the guys behind producing our original bags, was talking about tents with excitement. Looking at that had me thinking that maybe setting up tents are similar to making bags. Like, how you put together pieces of cloth...Nah, I don't know.

The combination between the two wild boys, Isshu, who had traveled all around Japan and is highly experienced in camping, and Wentz, who is a mountain climbing fanatic, was amazing when it comes to prepping our base camp.
These guys showed some skills that I would never see in our workshop.

RIDE

そして冒険ライドのスタート。

The adventure ride begins.

ライドも佳境。泥跳ねた皆のSWIFTバッグ達が格好いい。キャンプサイトに戻っていきます。

As the plot thickens, our Swift bags were all muddy and nice. And finally, it was time to go back to camp.

偶然同じキャンプ場だったお客様グループとバッタリで記念撮影。
皆装備もバイクもイケてました。

We happened to run into some of our daily customers at the camp site.
We took a picture for the memory.Their bikes were looking fine as well.

NIGHT
PM 6:006:00 p.m.

夜にはまたピットでは見れない仲間の特殊能力。

ウエンツ＆一周の火起こしのスキルよ。そして慣れた手つきでフレームポンプで空気を送り込む一周。大丈夫なのそれ溶けない？と聞くと「補修品が手に入りやすくて安いのがTOPEAKのいいところです」だそう。さすが。

飲み食いする前にしっかり防寒して、ワイワイと今日のライドを振り返る。「タイヤのチョイス失敗したわ！」とか「あのルートよかったよね！」とか話は尽きない。

そして、メインイベント。実はこの日のために、LUG HATAGAYAのニューシェフ小宮君に、スペシャルなお肉とカレーを仕込んでもらっていたのだ。これのために僕は、ラムダペダルを一生懸命踏んだのだ。

食べた瞬間出る言葉、「まじかよ」　最高すぎる。

そして夜は更けていきます。。

Night time. I was able to see some more of my friend's special powers.

The two wild boys are at it again. Their fire starting skills were remarkable.
Isshu starts blowing the fire with his frame pump. "That's gonna melt your pump. Are you alright with that?" I asked. He answers, "The good thing about TOPEAK is that you could easily find repairing parts and they're also cheep". I was mind blown for the third time today.

Before start eating and drinking, we made sure that we were warm and cozy. And we start to look back over today's ride. "Man, I shouldn't have chosen these tires!" "That route was amazing!" We couldn't stop talking about the amazing adventure.

Now for the main event. For this day, the new chef, Komiya-kun at our cafe/restaurant "Lug Hatagaya" prepared some special meat and curry for us. I kept pedaling my Lambda pedals specifically for this exact moment.
"GOD DAMN" was the first thing I said when I took the first bite of the special dinner.

And now it was time to call it a day...

MORNING
AM 6:006:00 a.m.

夜明けの日の出まで降り続いた雨が奇跡で止んで、後片付けとコーヒーから始めます。

Rain was pouring down for the whole first day of camp, and continued until the next morning.
But it magically stopped along with the sunrise. We started to pack our gear, as we take a sip of the good ol' cup of joe.

これにて、僕らのSWIFT CAMPOUT2020は終了。

”自転車” 普段の脚としてももちろん便利なんだけど、こんな休日の遊び道具としても最高です。それに気づかされたCAMPOUT。SWIFT好きになってよかった。生まれついての出不精が治りそう。

これを見て「自分も！」と飛び出してくれる方がいたら、趣味や遊び方が増えちゃう人がいたら感無量です。

それでは、SURLY,RIVENDELL,CRUST,VELO ORANGE ...今回のような遊びが得意なバイク達をたくさん準備してお待ちしてます！

This concludes our Swift Campout 2020.

Bikes are very convenient for our daily lives, but they are also a very fun "toy" to play with on your days off work. That is what I have learned through a "campout". And I'm so glad that I fell in love with Swift. I feel like I could cure my lazy ass if I keep going to these kind of events more often.

If any of you reading this thought something like, "I gotta go out and do stuff" I would be more than happy.

We will be back to building bikes like Surly, Rivendell, Crust, Velo Orange, and more bikes that you can have fun in the dirt!!
