Hello! Kasper checking in again!
\nIn Part 1, I wrote about riding the local trails with the Surly crew and the unexpected five hours I spent talking with Adam at the hospital.<\/p>\n

That conversation started with bikes, but pretty quickly became something much bigger.<\/p>\n

One of the things that stayed with me most was the way Adam thinks about who a bicycle is actually for.
\nAnd strangely enough, one of the best examples came from something very small.\"\"

At one point, we started talking about steerer tubes and headset spacers.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say a complete bike comes with six spacers.
\nMaybe that setup works perfectly for 99 out of 100 people.
\nBut there might be one person who thinks:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf only the steerer were a little longer, I could have built the position I really wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam was thinking about that one person.
\nThat really stood out to me.<\/p>\n

Realistically, Surly sells bikes all over the world.<\/p>\n

They can\u2019t sit down with every single customer before they buy a bike and ask how they ride, where they want their bars, what they plan to use the bike for, what feels comfortable, or what kind of bikes they\u2019ve ridden before.<\/p>\n

But a bike shop can.
\nAnd that led us into a conversation about Blue Lug.
\n\"\"
\nAdam talked about the different ways Blue Lug mechanics have built Surly frames over the years, and how one frame can turn into something completely different depending on the person riding it.<\/p>\n

A commuter.
\nA touring bike.
\nA trail bike.
\nA singlespeed.
\nSomething with a strange handlebar.
\nSomething covered in racks.
\nSomething incredibly simple.<\/p>\n

And what he seemed to value most wasn\u2019t only the finished bike.
\n\"\"

It was the conversation that created it.
\nThe mechanic asking the customer what they actually want to do.<\/p>\n

Understanding their body.
\nUnderstanding the way they ride or want to ride.
\nUnderstanding what they like and dislike.
\nThen building from there.<\/p>\n

One thing Adam kept coming back to was basically this:<\/p>\n

No matter how good a bicycle is, if it doesn\u2019t fit the person riding it, then it isn\u2019t really a good bicycle for that person.
\nThat made me think differently about what makes Blue Lug special too.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t only having cool parts.
\nIt isn\u2019t only building bikes that look good in photos.
\nThere\u2019s something important about sitting across from one person and figuring out together what that bike should become.<\/p>\n

The more we talked about it, the more I started to understand why Surly and Blue Lug have had such a long relationship.
\nSurly creates a bike with room for interpretation, and “Individuality”.
\nBlue Lug, through the conversation with the rider, helps give that interpretation a shape.<\/p>\n

Our conversation eventually moved into Surly\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

1×1.
\nSteamroller.
\nCross-Check.
\n\"\"\"\"\"\"
\nThere are Surly bikes that people still talk about with a huge amount of love.
\nAnd obviously that history matters.<\/p>\n

But Adam said something that I thought was really interesting.
\nHe doesn\u2019t want the current Surly team to become trapped by nostalgia.<\/p>\n

Not:
\n\u201cOld Surly was better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not:
\n\u201cLet\u2019s just remake everything from before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not:
\n\u201cThis bike was successful, so let\u2019s remake it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He clearly has a huge amount of respect for the people who built Surly before him.
\nBut what he wants to inherit isn\u2019t necessarily the exact answers they came up with.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the way they looked for the answers.<\/p>\n

Why did someone think the 1×1 needed to exist at that moment?
\nWhat was happening around the people who created the Steamroller?
\nWhat kind of riders and lifestyles led to the Cross-Check?<\/p>\n

Those bikes came from people looking at the world around them, riding, playing, noticing problems, and thinking: \u201cWhat if we made this?\u201d<\/p>\n

That idea stayed with me.<\/p>\n

The world changes.
\nCities change.
\nRiders change.
\nThe bike industry changes.
\nThe way people have fun on bikes changes.<\/p>\n

So respecting Surly\u2019s history doesn\u2019t necessarily mean building the same bikes forever.\"\"Maybe it means having the same curiosity.
\nThe same willingness to experiment.
\nThe same energy to look at the people around you now and ask:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of Surly should exist today?\u201d<\/p>\n

And honestly, I think that applies to Blue Lug too.<\/p>\n

Blue Lug has its own history now.<\/p>\n

Its own styles.
\nIts own bikes.
\nIts own way of doing things.<\/p>\n

But maybe respecting that history doesn\u2019t mean repeating what worked ten years ago either.
\nMaybe it means understanding why people cared in the first place, then finding a new answer for the people riding today.<\/p>\n

That was probably one of the biggest things I took away from talking with Adam.\"\"
\nAnother part of the conversation that really caught my attention was how interested Adam was in the stories Blue Lug already has.<\/p>\n

Not only the crazy Surly builds.
\nBut what happened after those bikes left the shop.<\/p>\n

We take photos.
\nWe do Bike Checks.
\nWe hand the bike over to the customer.<\/p>\n

For us, that can sometimes feel like the end of the story.
\nBut for the customer, that\u2019s “Day 1”.<\/p>\n

What does that bike look like three years later?
\nFive years later?
\nWhy did they change the handlebar?
\nWhere did all those scratches come from?
\nWhy is that same rack still on there after years?
\nWhat changed in their life?
\nWhere did that bike take them?
\nWho did they meet because of it?<\/p>\n

I remember thinking while Adam was talking:
\nMaybe we need “AFTER” ~ BIKE CHECKS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Go find those bikes again. Not when they\u2019re clean and freshly built. After they\u2019ve actually lived.<\/p>\n

Maybe the bike started as a commuter and slowly became a touring bike.
\nMaybe the owner moved somewhere new.
\nMaybe the original setup changed completely.
\nMaybe almost nothing changed because somehow they got it right from the beginning.
\nEither way, that story feels important.<\/p>\n

Because if a Surly isn\u2019t finished when you buy it, then maybe a Bike Check shouldn\u2019t always be the end of the story either.
\nThe more I thought about that idea, the more it made sense.<\/p>\n

A Surly can change because the person changes.
\nAnd maybe the best way to understand the bike isn\u2019t by looking at how it looked on the day it was built.
\nMaybe it\u2019s by looking at what happened to it afterwards.

\n“The People Behind the Brand”<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I first met Adam and the Surly team in Minneapolis, I was honestly a little nervous…
\nAnd then we spent five hours together. (at the hospital…lol)
\nBy the end of those five hours, that nervous-ness was completely gone.
\nWe talked about things I probably wouldn\u2019t write publicly.<\/p>\n

His life.
\nMine.
\nFamily.
\nMusic.
\nWork.<\/p>\n

The pressure that comes with leading people.
\nThe things we care about.<\/p>\n

I would never say I\u2019m glad I got hurt. I\u2019m not.<\/p>\n

I changed everyone\u2019s schedule, made people worry, and created a situation that didn\u2019t need to happen.
\nBut since I can\u2019t undo it, I can at least be grateful for what came out of those five hours.<\/p>\n

Because without them, I don\u2019t think I would have understood Adam, or Surly, in the same way.
\nAnd I think that\u2019s probably the biggest thing I brought home from Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

I came back liking Surly much more than I did before. Not only because the bikes are cool. Because the people who make them actually ride them.<\/p>\n

They play on them.
\nThey care about where the brand came from.
\nThey think seriously about where it should go next.
\nThey care about the rider who might need something different.
\nAnd when someone crashes on a trail, they change their plans and stay with them.
\nThat\u2019s the part that\u2019s hard to see from a website or a product page.<\/p>\n

A brand is never just a logo on a downtube.
\nIt\u2019s people.
\n\"\"
\n“Seeing My Own Bike Differently”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since coming back to Tokyo, I\u2019ve thought about my own Midnight Special a lot.
\nIt\u2019s funny because before this trip, I already loved the bike.
\n\"\"
\nBut now when I look at the Surly logo on the frame, I think I\u2019m going to see something a little different.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll think about the trails in Minneapolis.
\nThe people I rode with.
\nThe way the Surly crew moved through those trails like it was just another normal morning.
\nI\u2019ll think about Adam sitting next to me for hours.
\nI\u2019ll think about the conversations we had about old Surly, new Surly, Blue Lug, customers, fit, and what a bicycle can become over time.<\/p>\n

And I think that makes the bike feel a little more personal now.
\nNot because the frame changed. Because my understanding of it did.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s probably what I like most about bikes in the first place.
\nThe object stays the same, but the meaning around it keeps changing.\"\"
\n“Bringing Some of Minneapolis Back to Tokyo!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

One thing that was very clear after the trip was that all of us came back completely energized by what we experienced in Minneapolis.
\nEspecially the community around Surly.<\/p>\n

We joined a Surly group ride with local riders from around the city, rode together, talked, ate, and ended up at the Minnesota State Fair.
\nIt didn\u2019t feel complicated.<\/p>\n

People showed up because they wanted to ride together. That was it.
\nAnd that atmosphere really stayed with us.<\/p>\n

So we wanted to bring a little bit of that energy back to Tokyo.<\/p>\n

\nThat\u2019s a big part of why we decided to hold A SURLY HOLIDAY<\/strong> at Blue Lug from 9\/19th~23rd.
\nOn September 19, we\u2019ll be at Hatagaya talking and sharing more about Surly, Minneapolis, the people we met, and all the things that didn\u2019t fit into these blogs.
\nAlong with all the Surly bike models ready for a test ride! (20+ models!)<\/p>\n

Then on September 21st (or depending on the weather 22nd), Intergalactic Surly Day, we\u2019ll be hosting the Intergalactic Surly Ride 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Of course, Surly riders are very welcome. But you definitely don\u2019t need a Surly to join! (We may have some gifts for you!)
\nHonestly, I think that part is important. Because what inspired me most in Minneapolis wasn\u2019t only Surly as a brand.
\nIt was seeing people come together because bicycles gave them a reason to.<\/p>\n

You ride.
\nYou talk.
\nYou eat.
\nYou meet someone new.<\/p>\n

Maybe you see a bike that makes you want to change something about yours.
\nMaybe you ride somewhere you normally wouldn\u2019t.
\nMaybe nothing particularly special happens at all.<\/p>\n

But somehow you go home feeling a little different.
\n\"\"
\nThat\u2019s what I want to bring back from Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Not just the photos.
\nNot just the stories.
\nNot just the bikes.
\nThe feeling.
\nThe bike matters.
\nThe product matters.
\nThe history matters.<\/p>\n

But in the end, the thing that gives all of it meaning is the people around it. That was probably the biggest thing Minneapolis taught me.
\nAnd considering I\u2019ve only just started working at Blue Lug, I feel incredibly lucky that this was one of my first experiences here.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s still a lot I don\u2019t know about Surly. There\u2019s still a lot I don\u2019t know about Blue Lug.
\nAnd there are probably years of stories between these two companies that I haven\u2019t even heard yet.<\/p>\n

But now I\u2019m even more curious to hear them. And hopefully, help create some new ones too.
