Hi, my name is Kasper, and I recently joined Blue Lug!

\nThis is my first blog for Blue Lug, and I thought the best way to introduce myself probably isn\u2019t by listing where I worked before, what I\u2019ve done, or what kind of bikes I like.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think it makes more sense to start with how I ended up here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before bikes became such a big part of my life, I was always around creative work in some form.
\n<\/span>Music, design, production, events, people, different communities.
\n<\/span>\"\"
\nI liked the feeling of bringing things together. Different people, different ideas, different scenes.
\n<\/span>But bicycles were never really the center of that world for me.
\n<\/span>\"\"
\nAt least not at first.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you look at the bike world from the outside, it can feel pretty complicated.
\n<\/span>There are so many parts, standards, brands, histories, opinions, styles, and ways of doing things.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can easily feel like you need to know everything before you\u2019re allowed to really be part of it.
\n<\/span>But what I slowly learned is that bikes become much simpler once you actually start riding.<\/span><\/p>\n

You go outside.
\n<\/span>You take a road you don\u2019t usually take.
\n<\/span>You ride a little farther than you planned.
\n<\/span>You stop somewhere you\u2019ve never been.
\n<\/span>You get tired.
\n<\/span>You get lost.
\n<\/span>You notice another person\u2019s bike.
\n<\/span>You start a conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

And somehow, little by little, the bike becomes less about the bike itself.
\n<\/span>It becomes a way to experience a place.<\/span><\/p>\n

A way to meet people.
\n<\/span>A way to slow down.
\n<\/span>A way to think.
\n<\/span>\"\"
\nOne of the biggest turning points for me was a trip I took from Tokyo to Miyazaki by bike from March into April.
\n<\/span>Before that trip, I still thought of bikes partly as a way to get around, or simply as interesting objects.
\n<\/span>But riding that distance changed the way I looked at them.
\n<\/span>\"\"
\nEvery day I was moving through places I had never seen before.
\n<\/span>Sometimes things didn\u2019t go to plan.
\n<\/span>Some days were physically exhausting.<\/span><\/p>\n

But because I was moving slowly, I noticed things I probably would have missed if I had traveled by car or train.<\/span><\/p>\n

I stopped in places I normally would have passed through.
\n<\/span>I talked to people I never would have met.
\n<\/span>I started paying attention to the feeling of each town, each road, each landscape.
\n<\/span>\"\"\"\"<\/a>\"\"
\nWhat surprised me most was that on a bike, the space between destinations becomes part of the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trip isn\u2019t only about where you\u2019re going.
\n<\/span>The road itself becomes the trip.
\n<\/span>That changed something in me.
\n<\/span>\"\"
\nIt also made me much more curious about bicycles themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does someone choose this part?
\n<\/span>Why is this bike built this way?
\n<\/span>Why can two people ride completely different bikes and both be equally attached to them?
\n<\/span>Why do certain shops, brands, and communities have such a strong identity?<\/span><\/p>\n

That trip made me curious not only about the products, but about the whole culture and industry around bikes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The people.
\n<\/span>The shops.
\n<\/span>The history.
\n<\/span>The ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

The way different places shape the way people ride.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back, I think that trip from Tokyo to Miyazaki was one of the moments that pulled me much deeper into the bike world.
\n<\/span>And it also made me think more seriously about the kind of work I wanted to do and the kind of culture I wanted to be part of.
\n<\/span>The funny thing is that the more time I started spending outside on a bike, the more I started looking inward too.<\/span><\/p>\n

I started noticing what kind of places I enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n

What kind of people I naturally connect with.
\n<\/span>What kind of work makes me excited.
\n<\/span>What I want to spend more time doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

And maybe most importantly, what kind of culture I want to be part of.
\n<\/span>That\u2019s one of the things that eventually brought me closer to Blue Lug.<\/span>\"\"\"\"<\/a>
\nAt first, it\u2019s easy to think of Blue Lug as a bike shop.
\n<\/span>And of course, it is.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the longer I\u2019ve been around it, the more I\u2019ve realized that bikes are only one part of what makes this place interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s design.
\n<\/span>There\u2019s clothing.
\n<\/span>There are bags.
\n<\/span>There\u2019s food.
\n<\/span>There\u2019s music.
\n<\/span>There\u2019s travel.
\n<\/span>There\u2019s photography.
\n<\/span>There are people making things with their hands.
\n<\/span>There are people obsessing over tiny details.
\n<\/span>There are people just trying to have a good ride home.<\/span><\/p>\n

And all of those things somehow meet through bicycles.
\n<\/span>That felt familiar to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

It made me realize that I wasn\u2019t necessarily leaving my old world behind and entering a completely new one.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bike was actually becoming a bridge between a lot of the things I had already cared about. That\u2019s probably one of the reasons I feel so excited to be here now. I\u2019m also still very much learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are people around me who have been building, riding, fixing, designing, racing, touring, collecting, and thinking about bikes for much longer than I have.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I think that\u2019s a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I still remember what it feels like to look at this world from the outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

To be curious, but not know where to start.
\n<\/span>To like something before fully understanding why.
\n<\/span>To see a bike and just think, \u201cThat looks cool,\u201d before knowing anything about the parts on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to keep that perspective with me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Especially working with the Global Team, I want to help people outside Japan understand not only what Blue Lug sells, but what makes the culture around it special.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why certain bikes are built the way they are.
\n<\/span>Why certain bags or racks get used for years.
\n<\/span>Why people here care so much about small details.
\n<\/span>Why someone might ride across Tokyo just to eat somewhere with friends.
\n<\/span>Why a bicycle can become connected to so many other parts of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think all of that can be explained through product specs alone.
\n<\/span>A lot of it is in the stories, the people, the places, and the reasons behind things.<\/span><\/p>\n

So with this blog, I want to start sharing more of that.
\nNot as someone who knows everything about bikes.
\nMore as someone who is still discovering what this world has to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rides, the people, the products, the ideas, the mistakes, the places, and all the small things that make me want to go deeper.
\n<\/span>And pretty quickly, bikes have already started taking me somewhere I never expected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI recently had the opportunity to travel to Minneapolis with Kaneko-san, Sub-san, and Santa from Blue Lug to visit the Surly team.
\n<\/span>For me, it was more than just a work trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a chance to see another bike culture from the inside, meet the people behind a brand I had only known from Japan, ride with them, hear their stories, and understand a little more about how a place can shape the way people ride and think about bikes.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also reminded me again how much of this world is built around people, relationships, and shared experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

That trip deserves its own story, so I\u2019ll save that for the next blog.
\n<\/span>Going outside has helped me look inside.
\n<\/span>And somewhere along the way, bicycles became a big part of that.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m still figuring out where this road goes, but I\u2019m happy to be on it.<\/span><\/p>\n
